The Clocks Rewind

Everything was different this summer. Jaya loved staying with her grandmother. Grandma owned a sweet shop, after all; the old-fashioned kind with jars of sweets you weighed out into little paper bags. But Mum and Dad had been acting so strangely lately. Whispered conversations. Mysterious phone calls. And now Jaya and her little brother, Ash, had been packed off to Grandma’s for the whole school holiday.
After a busy morning helping in the shop, Grandma said they could choose some sweets as a reward. While Jaya picked jelly babies and sherbet lemons, Ash teetered on a stool and reached down a dusty old jar from the very top shelf. The faded label showed historic scenes - pyramids, knights on horseback, a sinking ship, and many more – and, in swirly gold letters, the words, Time Toffees.
‘Ooh, these are weird!’ giggled Ash, stuffing a toffee into his mouth. Jaya thought she’d better try one too, just to make sure they hadn’t gone off. The taste kept changing; pineapple, bubble gum, marmite, chocolate cake . . .  She turned the wrapper over, searching for a sell-by date. Faint writing appeared before her eyes.

With Time Toffees all the clocks rewind,
As you journey back, they’ll help you find . . .
Before Jaya could read more, the ground began to shake. The lights flickered. She grabbed Ash’s arm and the jar of Time Toffees . . .

Looking suspiciously around their space, different times flash past them. Medieval Times, Ancient Egypt, Stone Age, all in a strange, mysterious time vortex. Suddenly they appear on rocky ground. Then there was a bellow and a roar, Ash and Jaya only knew they could be in one place, prehistoric times with the dinosaurs! Then, a glow shines in front of them. “What’s illuminating our eyes?” Jaya questions.
“What’s with the green glow?” Ash expressed?

As they walked towards the light, They realise it is a humongous egg. “A dinosaur egg!!!” they both exclaimed at the same time.
“Is that the egg our parents were talking about?” Jaya wondered aloud.
“Maybe it is,” Ash replied, “We should take it with us.”
All of a sudden, a meteor broke the sound barrier, crashing through the earth’s atmosphere toward the planet. “That’s the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs!” Jaya exclaimed.
“Quick, let’s eat a Time Toffee thingy!” Ash shouted. They ate a time toffee and, grabbing the mystic egg, they disappeared…

… 1886

Jaya slowly looked around. Dust filled her nostrils as she searched for her brother, Ash. The obscurity of the sky and the thick, black smoke caused her to convulse; her eyes became blurry. She saw a black-figured silhouette...
‘Oi, get off the ground you pauper!’ Jaya felt herself being grasped off the ground, but couldn’t resist the temptation to close her eyes.
Her hands clenched in Ash’s as they fell asleep…

Ash appeared in her view,” Wake up, where are we Jaya?” As Jaya rubbed her eyes, she noticed she was in a small, freezing room. Stomping and bickering could be audible from miles away. They opened the oak door, tip-toeing towards the commotion. “I`m so tired: I have a headache.” Suddenly, stomping was heard. Ash’s screams became muffled. She was strangled and whipped. Will she ever get out of this life?

What could he do? In his head, he thought. He could do something but it was risky… but he needed to do this and he went on to do it. BOOM PAAAA!!! Everyone heard in the hallway, the figure was gone and Tom was astonished…

He was gone with just one click. Tom had heard in the hallway everyone chatting about what just happened and then they saw Tom run out of school.

Tom was chasing the figure but when it saw Tom it vanished. He thought one of his class mates was behind this, but how? How did they just disappear? Surely it couldn’t be his classmates? What will happen next…

After an inexplicable feeling, Ash and Jaya, who were coming to their senses right now, suddenly appeared in a flash of blue light, in the midst of a colossal fortress, surrounded by great walls, worn with age. They spotted a man, dressed in extravagant shining silver armour and chainmail, a noble-looking crest emblazoned directly above where his heart was. Jaya and Ash caught a glimpse of his face through a small gap in his helmet. To them, he was no commoner but an obvious member of royalty, his long, silky hair, and his abnormally chiselled jawline giving this away.

“Look, Jaya!” shouted Ash, pointing at something quite magnificent directly opposite him- a group of men playing fanfare, which sounded like sweet honey to his young ears. At this point, Jaya knew where they were- medieval England. Jaya had learned about this period of time in History books, but the real thing could not be more different. The man in the armour had just mounted on a chestnut-coloured steed with the smoothest mane. At this point, he was elevated above everyone else, just about to embark on a journey to a land which was about to be conquered by this dignified, yet seemingly ruthless man. It was at this time when he spotted Jaya and Ash, clueless, gaping in awe of the unfamiliar sights and sounds surrounding them. He immediately shouted, “Intruder! Folk of the kingdom, we have found two spies from Yorkshire! Get them!” He started to charge at the now shocked Jaya and Ash, whom had now started to run for their dear lives. He brandished a sword that glistened in the sun, and was just about to catch them, when both of the children chewed on their Time Toffees…

In a sand covered land they arrived. They knew they couldn’t stay as time was not on their side.
“Where are we?”said Ash
“Ancient Egypt probably.”Jaya responded
“And nothing has tried to kill us yet.”he said
“Yeah, not yet but there is still wild animals, locusts, diseases and also no food or water in sight apart from the Time Toffees and when we eat them we travel to a different time and we will eventually run out of them.”she complained
“Well then shouldn’t we find some place to stay the night and food other than the Time Toffees?”
“No we are probably better off going somewhere else.”she said
They opened the jar, picked two Time Toffees and put them in their mouth and chewed.

Ash opened his eyes only to close them soon after. The blinding light from the sun shone down it making hard for him to open his dark brown eyes. “Wake up, you good for nothing slave!” The sound of a whip cracking through jolted him from his daze and sat right up like the other boys in the room. They start getting up and ready for work and, confused and unsure, Ash followed in suit.

Jaya woke up in the softest bed she’d ever been in and snuggled deeper into the large pillow. “Wake up, young madam,” a soft voice broke the silence. Jaya sat up obediently and walked up to the lady in the maid dress. Smiling, she lead Jaya to her bathroom to do her morning routine. Two other maids joined after and helped into a puffy, sapphire dress with sparkles on it. While they were doing this, Jaya let the events sink in: Ash was no were to be seen, the Time Toffees were no where to be seen and she was a Victorian lady.

Panic flooded through her veins and the moment the maids stepped back she fled. On her mad run through the house, she collided quite painfully with a small 10 year old boy. “Ash!” she cried with relief. Without warning, the said boy stuffed a Time Toffee into her mouth and did the same with himself. They chewed and arrived in another unknown place.

They mysteriously woke up with a shock; it was a dark, mystical place. Slowly, they turned their heads trying to figure out where they were. Instead, they realized the jar of toffees was beside them. They gawked at the sweets. Did they dare to take another Time Toffee? They shared looks with each other with a bad feeling flooding their bodies. Ash took a time toffee but Jaya didn’t dare take one. Ash said “Are you ready?’’ she froze and exclaimed “NO! I’m not going to do that again!” But they did!!!!!!!

Then they disappeared to who knows where…

As the two ate the toffee, sudden flashes of past events blazed through their minds and they were then sitting in the same room as George Wasington watching as the Founding Fathers signed the Constitution. They then warped through time to the first human, the they saw Beethoven, they were then in the Stone Age, there were man that walked with a hunch and they made unrecognisable sounds which seemed to simulate a laugh.
“What just happened?” said Jaya
“Are we dead?” said Ash
“No but I don’t know where, or when, we are,” said Jaya
“Do you still have any of those Time Toffees?”
“Yeah, I do still have them.” replied Ash.
“Well what are we waiting for, let’s eat them.” urged Jaya.
The two then ate the candies and the ground started to shake, the cavemen like people all around them disappeared. They were then back in the candy shop.
“Now where did you two run off to?” asked Grandma.
They then said, “You wouldn’t believe us if we told you.”
