Tommy Donbavand - In Memory

14/11/2019

This year's Write Path is dedicated to the memory of wonderful author Tommy Donbavand who sadly died this year. He donated story starters for the project every year and was the funniest, kindest man you could ever wish to meet. We are honouring his memory by including one of his starters each day.

Cameron was playing on his computer when the letterbox rattled.  Mum and Dad had taken Kelly out to buy new school shoes.  He was in the house alone.
“Funny,” he said to himself.  “There isn’t usually any post on a Sunday.”
Setting his laptop aside, he padded downstairs in his socks to retrieve the lone, brown envelope on the mat.  There was no name on it, no address - in fact, nothing at all to identify who the letter was for, or where it had come from.
He ripped open the flap, and found a single CD inside.  On the disc, scrawled in black marker pen, were the words: 'Play me to learn the truth!’
Taking a deep breath, Cameron headed back upstairs…

Holding the disc in his left hand, he ran to his room, blew the dust off the disc and placed it inside the CD player. After a moment of silence, an eerie whisper played, “Cameron, I’m watching you.” a man’s voice said, “ I am here to help you, not hurt you. As you may know, your parents and Kelly have gone out and it seems as though they aren’t coming back.” Cameron gasped and stumbled backwards, he put his hands over his ears and shook his head. “This house is not what it seems” the man on the disc continued, “Your parents and sister have died in a car accident but they will be back soon.” Cameron was shocked, “What could this mean?” he thought. Cameron heard the front door creak open and footsteps plodding up the staircase. He hears a loud bang and then silence.
“Hello… is anybody there?” Cameron whispers.
“Cameron, there’s been an accident, but we are back here safe now, what’s wrong? …

Slowly, he puts the mysterious CD into the CD player. Suddenly, he saw two masked men that look like clowns!

In a blink of an eye, he saw his parents attached to a bomb - this was not an ordinary bomb, it was wrapped in shiny, metal, chains with sharp, shimmering machete looking spikes. Then, he saw the letter taped on the back of the CD. It was from his parents, it said “come to this place or your parents will die. You have three days to do this starting from… NOW!” Immediately he saw a code, it said ‘OGH’ then he realised it was the old greenhouse, his nans greenhouse a mile away. Suddenly, it came into his head - his Nan was killed by stalkers. She had passed something mysterious onto his parents and now it was all up to him. Curiously, he saw the reflection of the killers and they were at his door step, he had to hide. Rapidly, he hid under the bed, then he heard a bang - he saw them walk away…
Loudly, they shouted “two days from now we’ll be back.” The next morning, as promised, they were back, so he hid and heard the familiar “one day left”.

…He didn’t know what to do.

So then he started to panic “What do I do?” he said to himself. “Oh where’s my sister Kelly?” Cameron had forgotten all about her. He ran upstairs and grabbed his phone and then called Kelly.

Kelly didn’t answer the first time but a random stranger finally answered “Who is this?” Cameron said. COULD THIS BE THE FREAKY CLOWNS HE SAW?

“What do I do?” Cameron said to himself. SO HE ENDED THE CALL…..BEEP….BEEP….CANCELLED!!!!Someone knocked at the door, he thought it would be Kelly. So he called her one more time but then she didn’t answer. Cameron freaked out about Kelly. THEN OPENED THE DOOR…….

Cameron heard the voices of his parents and hid under his bed. The voices were coming closer to his room. He could feel his heart pounding. “Son were are home.” Said his father. But there was something peculiar about the voice, an eerie, dull, loud voice. That had a sort of arrogance to it. They entered his room. he froze. The hair on his skin lifted. A shiver went down his spine. Then smash! His computer smashed onto the ground and a piece of glass hit his hand and cut him. He resisted the urge to scream out in pain. “Where is this fool? “Said another voice. “The boss is going to kill me if we don’t find him, the boy needs to understand the danger he is in.”

Bang. A gunshot rung around the room and the fake father dropped dead to the ground. Blood dripped out of his mouth. His head turned to Cameron. Cameron made eye contact with the man and could see his sky-blue innocent eyes. Cameron could only see black boots that had stepped on the man. Questions were streaming through his mind who is this strange bloke what does he want with me. “ Boss, the Donbavand group found him first and I had to shoot one down.” Cameron could hear the boss through the telephone. “Look, you need to find that boy we need him I have his parents and sister “said the boss. “I’m coming back to headquarters now”

The man turned he heard a rumbling sound coming from outside the window. A droplet of water fell on his head. Then water started to fill the ground and he tried to open the door. But the door wouldn’t budge. The water was still filling and he turned. Cameron was floating there. Eyes dark blue glowing water was filling fast. Cameron had water flowing out his hand. The water had now filled the room and Cameron was still breathing. The man was drowning. He grabbed onto Cameron screaming for help. Cameron didn’t budge. The man stopped and slowly sunk to the ground.

Cameron looked the man in his eyes, the life in the man’s body was draining out fast. Then Cameron realised that man was the only way he was ever going to find his family. Cameron knew the man couldn’t be trusted, so when the man had stopped fussing and screaming under all the water Cameron approached the man. He gingerly walked over to the man, he paused ,what if the man was playing dead and was waiting for the right moment before he attacks Cameron? Cameron picked up the broom at the corner of the room and poked the lifeless body right in the ribs. He was actually dead, Cameron knew what he had to do so he took his headquarter’s keys and entry card. This moment was like every spy movie he had ever watched. It occurred to him that he might need the phone of the man to contact anyone who could possibly help him. Would he have to take the man’s thumb. Then he remembered that he was given a spy kit for his birthday that helps you print out a finger or thumb print he quickly got the kit and took the man’s thumb print as was off to find his family. But there was one problem he didn’t know exactly where they were. But he wasn’t going to give up so he continued his journey.

The boy quickly fled the building clenching onto the man’s phone and the finger print, he knew he had to get his parents back but how could he if he didn’t have a clue where they were? Cameron had managed to grab his bag filled to the brim with supplies and his spy kid gadgets ( which finally turned out to be useful) and headed off. But Cameron was still shocked about the previous events especially when he was not drowning (even though he should have been); maybe this was why these people wanted their family or maybe this is just the beginning of his powers...

Opening the man's phone the he sees two unread text messages, one is from the man's boss . asking him if he got the boy, the other message was were they were keeping his family. Following the directions he released it was his old nans green house. He busts in and sees his family tied up with two men opening eyes he shoots two laser beams hitting both men square in the chest. Their knees buckle and the man fall flat on there face. He quickly goes defuse the ticking time bomb and cuts the chains with his laser vision. ̈̈ I have to defuse the bomb ̈ Cam shouts. He cuts the bomb and, using his super speed runs picks up the bomb and runs to throw it in the ocean. He runs back to his family and brings them home. ̈Hoorah for Cameron!̈ ̈ The family shouts and the boss hearing what happened to their men never bother them again.
