Tommy Donbavand - In Memory

13/11/2019

This year's Write Path is dedicated to the memory of wonderful author Tommy Donbavand who sadly died this year. He donated story starters for the project every year and was the funniest, kindest man you could ever wish to meet. We are honouring his memory by including one of his starters each day.

“Double maths again!” I groaned to Max as we trudged slowly towards room 14. “It can’t be a whole week since last time.”“I was thinking the same thing,” said Max. “I reckon Mr Chronos has got some sort of time machine that lets him bring Thursdays around quicker just so he can find a way to control our brains.”
I laughed. It was just like Max to come out with something crazy. Like the time he suspected the school dinner ladies had been replaced with identical robots built by the head teacher. “You should write this stuff down!” I told him as we reached room 14 and made for our desks near the back. For once, we were the first to arrive. “It would make a cool script for a sci-fi movie."
“I’m being serious,” said Max with a frown. “Mr Chronos is an evil genius from the future sent back to find victims for his evil schemes.”
“So...” snarled an angry voice as the classroom door slammed shut. “You’ve figured it out, at last!”

We spun to see Mr Chronos walking slowly towards us, carrying an envelope.

We went up to him and asked: “What’s that sir?”

“Oh,” responded Mr Chronos, “It’s just a letter from the…uh…the taxman they’re just a bit suspicious of me, that’s all.”

“What are they suspicious about sir?” I questioned, in a weary voice.

“NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU BOYS!” shouted Mr Chronos.

Max dipped his head and zipped back to his seat, but all I could think about was what the so-called taxman wanted from him.

I saw my other friend Stig sneaking over to us.

“Hey,” Stig said quietly, “Something seems up with Mr Chronos.”

“Yeah,” I replied, “He snapped at me for no reason.”

I turned towards Max, “Do you think he’s trying to hide something from us?”

“I dunno but we shouldn’t get caught up about it,” said Max.

“Are you sure? I think this could be quite interesting,” I said, hoping to convince Max.

All of a sudden Mr Chronos stormed out of the room mumbling something to himself. Shortly after he left, Mr Jackson entered the room looking paler than usual.

“I apologise about what happened with Mr Chronos. He had to leave suddenly due to a personal issue so I will be taking the class today.”

We began our lesson although the thought of what is going on never left our minds…

(Teacher's comments! Not part of the story) There was an amazing atmosphere! There was a real buzz in the room and we're looking forward to taking part next year. Everyone had a great time and gave lots each other support and showed their teamwork skills. It was just a great start to the morning. (Teacher's comments! Not part of the story)

As we were leaving from our last lesson, Mr Jackson beckoned us over. “I’m sorry boys, but Mr Chronos has issued both of you an after school detention.” With sir giving us a sympathetic glance, we trudged out of the classroom. A few minutes later, we entered the detention room with irritable Mr Chronos .Another girl, with flaming red hair, was sat in the corner of the room, looking intrigued.

Soon after me and Max had entered the room, the girl began interrogating Mr Chronos, asking all sorts of personal questions about the envelope, although we were confused, we decided to ignore it. Sir looked like he was about to explode with anger with all these questions, and for some reason his teeth were getting shaper and his body more tense. Suddenly, the girl threw a dictionary at the window, it smashed into a million pieces before the girl jumped out. Me and Max instinctively followed snatching the letter on their way. CRASH! We landed awkwardly but luckily we weren’t hurt. Unfortunately, the red head girl had broken her ankle badly. But before worrying about that, we tore open the letter, It was an anonymous note containing two single sentences they said we know your secret. You’re a monster.

We looked up at the window of Mr Chronos’ classroom, he was glaring down at us and shouting “GET BACK UP HERE RIGHT NOW! OR TRIPLE DETENTION FOR BOTH OF YOU!” Max and I ran for it and hid behind a nearby tree.

Max and I looked at the letter again. There was something strange on the back of it.
“Look, there is more on the back!” said Max, very surprised.
The rest of the letter said…
MESSAGE FROM THE INTERGALACTIC POLICE
Mr Chronos,
You have 1 earth week to return yourself back GALACTICA CENTURAS, the base of intergalactic police, or we will send a high security Z419 policecraft to collect you from earth and take you to prison for 10 galactic years on top of a fine of 100 mlyth.

GALCATICA CENTURAS POLICE AGENCY (G.C.P.A)

“Mr Chronos must have read the message from the Galactic police!” said Max.
“That’s why he kept the letter hidden from us!” I said.
The bell rang for break. We went off to the library to try and find some books on space. We narrowly missed Mr Chronos, who was walking down the corridor with a furious expression on his face. Eventually we found a large book entitled “THE GALAXY” on page 464, we found out that Galactica Centuras was a planet 999,999,998 light years away from earth, and also the only other known planet in the universe that is hospitable to life.

Max had gone off to the toilet, but suddenly burst back into the library panting,
“Shush!” said the librarian, Mrs Pilkington.
“Sorry” Max whispered.
Then suddenly, Mr Chronos burst through the door…

“WHAT ON EARTH HAVE YOU DONE?” his booming voice echoed throughout the library.
Max and I looked at each other in surprise.
“Uh…you see sir…” Max muttered under his breath.
“See what?”
Max threw a book which zoomed at his face like a lightning bolt.
“Quick, Let’s get out of here, before he recovers!” I retorted. We slid down the staircase rail hoping to make a rapid escape, but I jinxed myself and tripped on the final step. As I tumbled across the floor, bracing myself for Mr Chronos. My muscles were tense, I was scared.
“You have to hide out of sight, Max.” I commanded.
“I can’t leave you, we’ve been best friends fo--”
“JUST HIDE ALREADY!”
Mr Chronos was inches away from me, and he wasn’t looking too happy. The thought haunted my consciousness, “What will he do to me?”.
Seconds passed slowly, and someone came barging through the door. I felt like I knew this person. She went up to Mr Chronos and pressed a place on his neck, he instantly fainted.
“Come on, we’ve got to get out of here!” she said to me and Max.
Max and I were speechless. We sprinted out the building and made it out safely.
“How did you do that?” I remarked in awe. She replied with,
“All aliens from GALACTICA CENTURAS have a weak spot, in this case, there was one on his neck.”
I had a sudden flashback of my past, I saw myself playing with another girl, who perfectly resembled the girl standing in front of me now.
“Who are… you?” I questioned.
“I am…”

I recognised the girl but it wasn't the girl I knew. There was something different about her. shee still had that same aggravated face, sharp posture and hooked nose. But his eyes, his eyes were different. They were glazed over like ice on an early winter’s morning. There was something I couldn’t quite place, something odd about him. Something strange I couldn’t understand.
Suddenly, my eyes flashed open, head throbbing, sweat dripping down my cheek. I was back in reality. The reality I knew. I always had nightmares but they were never this real, never this true.
There was an eerie silence about the room, it echoed around my mind. My clock. I glanced over at it, it was still, frozen in time. There was something wrong about this image in front of me, but it wasn’t the clock. It was the thing next to it. A brown stained envelope was lying lifelessly just out of reach. It was adorned with a red wax seal that was stamped with a symbol I almost recognised. Before I knew it my hands were ripping the envelope open, the vivid memories of my dream flooding back to me. It was the same letter as in my dream, but with a different message, a coded message. A bunch of symbols I have never seen before but somehow recognise. Then I knew I had to go to school, to find Mr Chronos, to save him. So I did.

As I quietly wandered into my hushed classroom I saw a bright, turquoise glow
leading to the mysterious Mr Chronos’ desk, I slowly grabbed the door handle and the
glow seized to exist. I took one step into the classroom and a gust of heat rushed
across my face making my eye tear up.
I started to power-walk over towards the desk, blinded by heat that swept my face a
few seconds before. Clenching the letter firmly in my hand, Mr Chronos came into
view and I ran over hoping he would be able to translate the mysterious code that was
imprinted on the thick cardboard. I slammed the sheet down on the wooden desk and
soon felt a horrifying shiver pass down my spine. Suddenly, I felt a hand firmly grip
my shoulder and viciously spin me round. My eyes spun and vision went blurry.
Eventually, my eyes focused on what was in front of me. I was staring at the man who
had started all of this, but somehow looked so innocent. The rage that was built over
the years finally spilt out as out of nowhere, my fist flung itself at him using all my
strength. Mr Chronos was out cold.
My knuckles ached however I continued to search for answers. Anything. I just
needed answers. The floorboards behind me creaked, so out of curiosity, I turned
round.
“Oh it’s only you.” I sighed as the red headed girl walked towards me.
“Only me? I am many things but me.” She exclaimed. I took a step back cautiously,
as she threw her arms behind her head. She peeled her face back to reveal a
completely different person…

“ I Wonder why he left said “ whispered Max.

“ I don't know” I replied back.

̈ ̈BOYS! ̈ yelled Mr. Jackson. “See me after class,” Mr. Jackson firmly stated . Mr. Jackson began to teach again but was stopped by the bell.

As Max and I started leaving Something happened. The door quickly slammed shut, and Mr Chronos appeared. Mr Jackson quickly ran to the window and threw it open diving out and landing in the schools shrubbery two stories down.

"COWARD” yelled Mr. Chronos.

As he turned to Max and lifted him up, ̈AHHHHHH” Max screamed. ¨ You are coming with me!¨ he bellowed.

Mr Chronos, while being occupied with Max, did not see me coming up from behind him with the fire extinguisher I swung it once hitting him in the back of the head. Mr Chronos fell having been knocked unconscious. “Quick! call the cops before he wakes up!̈ ̈ Max yelled.

When they got off the phone with the police, I heard a noise turned around, and Mr Chronos was gone. In his place was the envelope, the one that he was crying about earlier. Walking to pick it up, Max said, “I wonder what is it?”
A beeping sound that resembles an alarm clock starts going off. Suddenly I was sitting upright in the bed.

“WAKE UP IT IS TIME FOR SCHOOL¨ It was just a bad dream.
