CRASH! I clung to side of the cliff, and watched as a ball of fire the
size of a bus hurtled past me. It bounced down the mountainside as if
it were no more than a pebble before exploding into white-hot
fragments below us.
“If you were wondering if the volcano is active,” said Ellie,
scrambling up to the next ledge, “then that should have given you a
clue.”
“It’s not safe!” I said, trembling. “We must be mad to come up here.”
“There’s no turning back. The entrance to the Temple of Sorrows is so
close. We can’t give up now.”
Ellie had a determined frown on her face. There was no arguing with her.
“I just hope that treasure map you found was right,” I muttered,
carefully edging along the ledge behind her. “And I hope that this
legendary temple isn’t full of lava, rather than gold!”
“We’ll soon see,” she replied, excitedly. “Look!”
Carved into the rock was a huge door, flanked by massive columns. That
wasn’t all: the door was guarded…

by huge stone statues – knights or warriors, covered in armour and holding massive swords. Their eyes seemed to follow us as we clambered over the lava to get to the entrance. I looked up. There was a door. I pushed the door, and one of the warriors sprung to life, the sword swinging across the entrance, and almost taking my head off. I stepped back, and the warrior stopped. “Ellie,” I said. “I don’t think this is going to be very easy”. As I said this, I heard a crashing sound from further up the mountain. Appearing slowly around the sides of the temple complex were a group of strange creatures – covered in fire, but not being burned by it. They stepped into the temple, the warriors burst into life again, and the battle began. The fire monsters attacked the warriors. Swords swung, fire shot from side to side. “Help!” I screamed to Ellie, who was pointing at a small space between the battling warriors. We both ran towards it, and as we got closer, it because obvious there was a door there. I pushed the door, it crashed open, and we tumbled through, leaving the battle behind. It was dark. We couldn’t see anything, but we could hear something – a long way away, but getting closer…

Closer, closer. And then we heard the faint sound of heavy breathing. Was it myself – no, it wasn’t, it was definitely something or someone else. Then I heard Ellie scream, “Run, Tom, run!” At that point, I smelt the faint aroma of smoke and there was a flicker of light; Ellie had turned on her torch. I could tell that she had regretted it from the look on her face. There was smoke, lots of it and it formed a face; an ugly one.
“I knew this was going to be a bad idea. Why did you have to drag me into this?” I shouted.
“Well, how did I know that there were going to be stone statues that could move and lava creatures? I honestly didn’t expect this.” Ellie replied innocently as she sprinted across the make shift hall.
Suddenly, a huge lava monster appeared out of nowhere, there was no way out; it was blocking the entrance to the grand hall! Instinctively, Ellie pulled out her two litre water bottle. I shouted to her “Ellie, what do you think you’re doing?”
“I wonder how Indiana Jones survived all his adventures” She sighed. “What’s the one thing that puts out fire?”
“Oh, yeah, good thinking, go on then”
Ellie lobbed her water at the monster, it turned to stone instantly.
“Stone cold” I joked “Come on let’s go in” We’ve made it, but was it worth it…

The temple was full of strange carvings, our shadows danced along the walls. As we ventured deeper into the temple, we saw a glint of gold embedded in the marble. Ellie darted towards it and despite the feeling that something was wrong, I trailed along. Suddenly an ear shattering scream echoed throughout the temple. “What was that?” whispered Ellie “It sounded like someone was in pain!”
“I don’t know. Just keep moving.” We continued our journey, passing the gold as we tried to find the source of it. Soon we entered another chamber and felt a blast of heat on our skin.
“It’s boiling in here.”
“I don’t care Ellie. Where is the path?” We looked down and saw where the heat was coming from. A bright steaming pool of water sat in the middle of the chamber. The same scream emerged from the water. Suddenly, just as the scream ended, a huge dark blue serpent with a frilled neck exploded from the water and gave the same scream. It towered over us and spat a stream of boiling water at Ellie…

The specks of boiling water spat into her eyes like bacon on a pan; it sizzled into the veins of Ellie’s eyes blinding her. Quickly I grabbed Ellies’s scorching skin, burning my hand as I did, and pulled her up from the ground into an obscure, gloomy maze, slamming the door behind me, blocking the obscurities behind me. “Where are we?” enquired Ellie “Oh wait, I can’t see”.

“Come on Ellie, we don’t have the time, let’s go!” I replied rapidly. Trying to guide Ellie along the unstable path with only the light from my phone, I heard a shrieking scream from far away. Then suddenly I felt Ellie’s hand go dead as blood dripped on to my hand from her arm. I looked up. It was colossal. Its red, daring eyes stared deep into my soul, his intricate skin swayed above Ellie’s corpse, his blood-filled mouth made a distant crunching noise. What was it eating??? Ellie’s head had gone...

Devastated, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. My thoughts whirling, “What do I do? What will happen to Ellie? WILL I SURVIVE?” I should have known better. Ellie was always in her own world.
I heard another deafening scream behind me. I had to get away.
Past the dark trees, through the jagged grass and soon a door appeared out in the distance. A glistening chance of survival, just waiting for me to take it. I had no choice but to open it, my conscience telling me otherwise.
Creak… I reluctantly stepped through the battered, ash door and it immediately shuts behind me; a shiver went through my spine. As I continue on, the room I thought I was in starts to fill with fire and smoke. I gaged and coughed. I couldn’t stop, running, running, running.
Another, this time even worse, door appeared in front of me. Beads of sweat streamed down my head and all over me; it encased me, stealing all my energy. Creak… Weakly, I opened the second door and fell, trying desperately to regain strength. Struggling again, I gazed up to see a menacing, dragon-like creature hovering above.
This couldn’t be good.
It’s grey, scaly skin, jet-black wings and empty eyes intimidated me. It’s large, dark mouth looked like it could swallow me up at any moment. It aggressively landed back to the ground. Now it was face to face with me.
I froze…

The dragon swung at me with his razor sharp claws. We dodged the dragon’s ferocious claws and took cover. We ran to take cover behind trees and rocks. It got quiet but the dragon was sniffing us out and we had to be as still as a statue. The dragon found us an breathed its fire breathing breath, but it luckily didn’t hit us. We came up with a plan to make the dragon throw himself into the lava. We used bamboo and leaves to make a dinosaur to bait him in the lava. The dragon saw us right as we put the decoy out there. The dragon took the bait and fell into the lava and tried to fly back up but couldn’t because it hurt its wing on the way down, from a sharp rock. We stumbled into a trap door and led ourselves into a hallway that was made of gold...

As I looked at all the gold, I was shocked upon my discovery. When I first fell I thought I was trapped, but now I know what lies ahead. The dangerous lurking beast. He can sense my fear.
I thought I was safe, but now all I can do is let out a cry, “Ahhhhh.”
I only have a matter of seconds before I will get devoured. I had to look around this place for an escape. Then I see my escape.
“ Uhhhhh,” I say as I slide under the beast’s legs.
“ ROARRRRRRRRRRR, “ the beast says.
I am so terrified that all I can do is try for my life. I’ve already lost Ellie and now it is up to me. As I think and think and think, all I can do is remember that I have to survive. As I’m crawling up I only have to pull my legs up. I’m so close and then…
“ AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” I scream as the beast pulls me back under.
I realized that this is the fight for my life. All I can do is think of the teeth of the beast and I start to panic. This place is crazy with all the creatures. Many would not have a chance to survive.
Finally the fight was too much.
“ help……”
I dragged down watching my blood fall and then I closed my eyes…..forever.
