Story 2   Jo Cotterill https://jocotterill.com

It was on a Tuesday that it happened. I don’t know why I was surprised; after all, Tuesday is traditionally the day that strange things happen in my family. There was the time that Aunt Carol suddenly sprouted petunias all over her head; and the time a man came to the door with a dragon on a lead saying it had been left to us in someone’s Will. By the time we get to Wednesday, the strange things have usually sorted themselves out (though the dragon still lives with us and is very useful for lighting the fire and scaring away burglars).
This particular thing was even stranger than usual, however. I’d just finished brushing my teeth when I had the most peculiar sensation. It was like a sudden drop in air pressure; you know, when you take off in an aeroplane and your ears pop and for a few moments you can’t hear properly. I swallowed and rubbed my jaw, and the sensation went away. I didn’t think anything more of it, until I called out goodbye and went out of the front door to catch the school bus.
I didn’t get much further than my front gate, however, because of the sight that made my jaw drop in astonishment.

Right in the middle of the stony pavement, black roses started to sprout out of the ground, twisting and winding itself around the bus. A sudden gush of wind rushed passed me. I felt the tingling sensation again - the same one I felt earlier. My heart sank down to my feet. Did it have to be me? Screeches and screams overwhelmed me, as my friends on the bus panicked. Suddenly, a hole in the ground unlatched under me and I was being sucked. I grabbed on to the first thing I could see. A tree trunk. I held on to dear life. My heart was pounding like drums. It was too strong. Another gush of wind rushed straight to me; knocking me out unconscious; I could no longer feel myself. When I woke up, it looked like I was in a rabbit hole. The one in Alice in Wonderland. That was one of my favourite books. All of a sudden, black roses began to sprout around me. It was like I was in the worst nightmare of my life and I couldn’t wake my life. In the distance, In the distance I could hear footsteps. I was about to call out for help but I was paralyzed with fear. All I could make out was a small croak. The rabbit hole was pitch black. I could once again feel the footsteps. The footsteps crept closer. Was I being imprisoned? Before my eyes, the rabbit hole was all lit up. I saw all the characters from Alice in Wonderland - except Alice. I looked down at myself. I looked exactly like Alice. I was dressed in a knee-length blue evening gown with a white apron. The characters started to help me out of the black roses. I asked “what happened?” nobody replied. “Could they hear me?” I thought to myself.

I went to bed late last night. Am I dreaming?
As I was helped out of the crumbling, desolate rabbit hole I felt the lush, lime-green grass below me. It left a tickling sensation under my feet. I can't be dreaming- this must be real? Who was this rescuer helping me?

We headed past trees of all kinds and within minutes a brightly, lit golden cave came into sight.

As the unknown creature- like person and I stumbled step-by-step, side-by-side to this illuminous mess of an illuminated cave, I saw a group of red eyed beasts of rabbits (much larger than usual rabbits) with different ways of telling time. One had a pocket watch, another had a clock and some had electrical devices. The first one to approach stared at their phone and suddenly gave us a disgusted look and uttered in a croaky voice, “What kind of creature are you!”
Another one, who had a stopwatch came to us, “I remember you from somewhere,” it exclaimed in a jolly voice, “Your face reminds me of someone or possibly somewhere.”
After talking to a few more aggressive but cheerful rabbits I made it to what looked like the end but then I realised there was no end! I turned to see the creature form into a colossal rabbit and the rabbits started closing in, gradually…

I shut my eyes and stood for a moment. Was I dreaming? I had to be dreaming. I opened my eyes and looked around me again. The giant rabbit was closer now, but it didn’t seem to be able to move very fast. My breathing started getting faster as the rabbit slowly closed the gap between us. I shut my eyes again. This couldn’t be happening; I was definitely dreaming. What’s that phrase people always say when something’s too good? Pinch me, I’m dreaming… that’s it. I pinched my left forearm, and another gust of wind knocked me off my feet.

I kept my eyes tight shut for a while, waiting for my breathing to slow. I braced myself for the worst, waiting for the pain to set in and trying to keep my mind blank. I waited for another few moments, but nothing happened. I stopped trying to keep my mind blank, and listened. Nothing. Everything was silent. I summoned up all my courage and opened my eyes. It turned out my anticipation was in vain, however, because I opened my eyes to the shadowy, illustrious black roses that lured me not so long ago. I felt the ground underneath me. Solid, hard ground. I wiggled my toes. I let go of the tree trunk I was clutching and pushed myself onto my elbows. I looked behind me and gasped. My legs were dangling over the edge of a huge hole, at least five metres wide and tunnelling down into the earth as far as I could see. With a massive effort, I heaved myself onto the ground and pulled my knees up to my chest, my back pressed against the tree trunk. As I regained my bearings, I was able to see through the fog of terror and suspense. The concave oddity was still there, tormenting me.

I stood up, trying not to touch the roses or the other unconscious bodies lingering around me. I didn’t know why, but I felt like touching the roses would be a very bad idea. Yet my curiosity was battling my instinct to investigate them further. Never mind. Between the roses, I could just about see my house. I looked around me to find something to hack through the roses, and found a huge branch that had fallen off the tree a few days earlier. I picked it up – who knew wood could be so heavy? – and started smacking at the roses, as if they were flies and my branch was a massive fly-swatter. After a few minutes, I made it to the door, where there was a small clearing in the thick, twisting plants. The front door was ajar, with just enough room for me to squeeze through. My older brother lay there on the floor, out cold, his right hand still stretched out, as if to grab the doorknob. I supposed this strange phenomenon had struck everybody.

My older brother Jonathon lay there still as if he was dead, ice cold and pure white. I shouted for my mum and dad but there was no reply. Suddenly I heard a scream, I ran upstairs and looked out of the window. It was my friend Rebecca being sucked into the huge rabbit hole. I ran downstairs. I tried to pull her out but it was to strong and she went in…
I yelled, “Rebecca!” but there was a long silence. Jonathon was still frozen solid.
“I need to get him near a fire to keep him warm,” I said in a worried voice. I was also worried about my parents because they were nowhere to been seen…
They might have been sucked in the hole with Rebecca. I wanted to save my friend and my parents if they are down there, so I jumped down the rabbit hole. It was pitch black until I got to the floor. There were still the Alice in Wonderland characters except Alice again. I was Alice in the blue dress but I didn’t care. I had to save Rebecca. I look everywhere for her but I couldn’t see her, I asked the white rabbit but he hadn’t seen her in Wonderland today. I asked the Mad Hatter but he hadn’t seen her either. He said he had seen her yesterday with the Cheshire Cat.

So then we went to see the Cheshire cat, well he found us in the woods. He was so mysterious and said
'Find her yourself'
I got mad and said
'Tell me NOW!'
he laughed and went half invisible and started going further into the forest. I followed and we ended up in a horrible Dark Forest with wired noises and things in the back ground.

I was terrified. Despite this, I continued to follow the Cheshire cat. I tread lightly, constantly looking into the depths of the forest for any ill-willed predators. l kept hearing the noises get louder and louder, and things flickering close by in the edges of my vision. At this point, I was ready to forget about my friend and run back to safety, but I knew that my best bet was to continue to follow the Cheshire cat. At this point, my stride turned into a timid walk as I was afraid. I was not scared of the forest, however. At this point, we had emerged from the dense canopy, and I could not believe my eyes. What lay before me was The Queen of Heart’s castle. As I was still in awe, the Cheshire Cat turned towards me and said, “This is where our journey will end, but you can find your friend on the path that never ends.” The path that never ends? What was he talking about? I had no idea, but I started on a random path. Here I traveled for hours upon hours. It truly was the path that never ends. My heart raced as I noticed a large crowd. There was Rebecca being led to a guillotine by the Queen’s knights. There was no time. Without thinking I ran to her only to be stopped in devastation. My jaw dropped, and I could not move. Rebecca’s lifeless body lay on the guillotine, her decapitated head in a basket. I wanted to scream. I wanted to scream as loud as I could and run, never to come back. “You’re next, kid.” I spun around and I was met by one of the Queen’s knights. Before I could react, his sword fell upon my head. All of a sudden, there was nothing. Or at least, that’s what it felt like. Was I dead? I had no idea. But for now, my mind was at peace.

Then I woke up with a horrible headache, what happened to me? The last thing that I remembered was one of the Queen’s knights hitting me on the head with a sword after my friend Rebecca’s head was cut off. I notice my surroundings now, the place I’m in looks like a dungeon with one window. I wonder if I can break it… I stand up to see if I can reach it and automatically my head starts pounding, what is wrong with me? I get back up even though my head hurts, to see that is bared off. Suddenly I hear a creepy laugh and turn around, it's the Cheshire cat. I say, “What are you doing here and why am I here?” He responds,”You were imprisoned by the Queen, but the Mad Hatter is on his way to save you with his army of unicorns.” I laugh, this can’t be real, there is no such thing as unicorns right? Maybe they are real in Wonderland, who knows, for now I’ll trust the Cheshire cat. Right as I finish that thought an explosion comes through the wall! The mad hatter comes in riding a unicorn with many others following. I am in shock, they do exist! The Mad Hatter shouts down at me “Come on up!” I climb on and suddenly feel sad about my friend Rebecca, suddenly we take off into the sunset and everything goes black… I wake up the next morning and it’s another normal Wednesday with the dragon.

Another Tuesday!

I went back to Wonderland the following day back in the Dark forest as if we were reliving the story to prevent Rebecca from dying. I was with everyone again hearing a strange noise. We looked around… No-one was to be seen? Suddenly in the glimpse of an eye I see a puff of smoke coming towards my surroundings. It was the wise, old caterpillar. He was puffing away at his pipe with no care in the world. We took a few short and slow steps towards him and asked, “Have you seen my friend, Rebecca?” He replied in a deep voice “ Nooo, Go away.” “Okay fine, goodbye!” We walked away and I was thinking ‘Where could she be?’, ‘What could she be doing?’. After a short amount of time we arrive at a huge field with a lot of twists and turns, then I remembered from the book it was the maze in front of the Queen's Castle. Her guards were surrounding it. I secretly walked around them while my friends distracted the guards so I could get to the maze before they cut off my head!

While in the maze I went face to face with the Queens of Hearts, trying to figure out if she was the one who had taken Rebecca. So I asked “ So you're the one who have taken my friend, Rebecca from me?” Queen replies “ No, you are the one that has taken my daughter from me”
“Daughter...I came to you to find my friend but now you are saying you are her mother?” I answered in a confused tone. “ Very well then I will search for her with you, guards prepare my carriage’’. I wondered where she could be then it came to me ‘’The Cheshire Cat did look suspicious when I mentioned her name he is probable holding her hostage’’ I told the Queen. The carriage was a golden and white car with angels on the side. There we go speeding towards where the Cheshire cat lived. Finally, we found her at last, getting hold of her in our arms. I then ask her “ Rebecca, do you know what happened to my brother Jonathan?”. She took a deep breath and answered “ The dragon got loose and started attacking him and, I’m sorry but he couldn’t last” A bright light appeared and all of the unexpected problems were resolved…It was Wednesday morning again everything was back to normal or at least what I call normal.

Aunt Carol was with the dragon, My parents were fighting like always, Jonathan was playing with his game console and I was reunited with Rebecca, everything was as it was.
